Why I love teaching voice lessons

All of us have the ability to sing. We’re born with it – all we have to do is open our mouths. But singing correctly, on the other hand, is something that has to be
learned.

I found this out the hard way. I was in my 20s, and I was singing with a band in dark nightclubs. One day, I was terrified to discover I had lost my voice.

That’s when I went to the doctor and discovered I had nodes – little nodules on my vocal chords. He said the nodes had developed because I hadn’t been singing correctly (of course the smoking, drinking and staying up late I was doing didn’t help things either).

So for the first time in my life, I began taking voice lessons.  I’m so grateful I studied with Dr. Harvey Ringle at Roosevelt University, who taught me how to breathe correctly and take care of the wonderful gift I had been given. Since then, I’ve realized that singing isn’t something that comes easily to everyone – you have to work at it.

Today, I don’t take my voice for granted. I have to take care of my body, and I have to continue to study with coaches and teachers to keep my voice in good shape.

As a voice teacher, I am always honored when someone wants to study with me. After all, people’s biggest fear is usually public speaking, and singing in public is not far behind! So I know that when people are singing with me, they are in a very vulnerable place, and I make an effort to provide a loving, supportive atmosphere.

When I first work with a voice student, I ask them about the vision they have for themselves when they’re singing. We talk about their favorite songs and the music that speaks to them, and we set a goal for what we’d like to achieve together.

I love working with singers of all ages and ability levels, from teens to adults, and from beginning singers who can barely carry a tune to veteran singers who are looking to brush up on technique and polish their performance skills.

Today, I am excited to be offering voice lessons in Des Plaines, Evanston, or at your home in the Chicagoland area. Don't live in Chicago? That's ok! I can now offer voice lessons via Skype, too.
